Balanced Scorecard Template

In short

A Balanced Scorecard template covering the four perspectives, financial, customer, internal process, and learning and growth, with objectives, measures, targets, and initiatives for each. It balances lagging financial results with the non-financial drivers behind them.

Financial numbers tell you what already happened. The Balanced Scorecard adds the three perspectives that explain why, and that you can still influence: customer, internal process, and learning and growth. This template gives each perspective the same four columns, objectives, measures, targets, and initiatives, so the strategy reads as a causal chain from the skills you build to the results you book.

How to use this template

  1. Fill all four perspectives, not just financial. The whole point is to balance lagging results with the drivers you can still move.
  2. Give each objective one clear measure and a target. A perspective with objectives but no measures is a wish list.
  3. Attach an initiative to each objective. The initiative is the work that will actually move the measure.
  4. Read the scorecard bottom to top as cause and effect. If better learning does not plausibly lead to better financials, the logic is broken.

Frequently asked questions

What are the four Balanced Scorecard perspectives?

Financial, customer, internal process, and learning and growth. Together they balance the lagging financial view with the non-financial drivers that produce it.

Is a Balanced Scorecard the same as a KPI dashboard?

No. A KPI dashboard is a set of metrics; a Balanced Scorecard is a strategy framework that organizes objectives, measures, targets, and initiatives across four perspectives and links them as cause and effect.
