A Rock is EOS terminology for a quarterly priority: one of the few most important things a person or company must complete in the next 90 days. The name comes from the metaphor of putting the big rocks in the jar first. Rocks are owned by one person, have a clear done state, and are capped in number to protect focus.
The discipline of Rocks is the cap. EOS recommends three to seven Rocks per person per quarter, no more, because the point is to choose. A Rock is binary at the end of the quarter: done or not done, with no partial credit, which keeps owners honest about scope.
Rocks fail the same way Key Results do: when the 90-day priority is not connected to the actual tasks moving it. A Rock that is "on track" in the weekly meeting but has no progress in the work is the warning sign EOS teams learn to watch for.
Company Rock: launch the partner portal to all tier-1 resellers by March 31. Owner: VP Partnerships. Status at quarter end is simply done or not done.
